about
The way Chris Isaak breaks his voice and sails up in register during “No I don’t wanna fall in love,” has always felt like someone reaching in and pulling a thread at the core of me, unraveling something real. It’s of course touching at the heartache of unrequited love, but to me, it speaks to the longing and tension between a person and anything they’re hopelessly drawn to that they know deep down does not serve them. For me, that’s anything from imbalanced or one-sided friendships, to being at home in a country that was not designed with my survival or best interest as a Black woman in mind. Wanting someone or something that’s not good for you, I think we’ve all found ourselves tangled in that desire before. I’m not sure what’s more human than that.

A lovely addition to the best project of 2023, that at some points feel like B-Sides, but is overall just as strong as the work that made it on "the record" Outer Estate
Intimate and unique. This album plays well with a bottle of Syrah crunched up in your finest pair of headphones with candles lit in a steamy bubble bath. sig
